This simple verse if taken seriously, would change the way we approach EVERYTHING!
There are obvious things that we might think of as acts of love – buying a gift, helping a friend, consoling someone in pain. But often the mundane and routine activities of everyday life are considered as nothing more than that – mundane and routine. Yet in each activity we are called (and given the privilege) to express love. Unloading the dishwasher, walking the dog, vacuuming the living room, changing a diaper, painting a wall, paying a bill … all become opportunities to love someone.
How is this possible? Aren’t these just routine tasks that need to be done or the house becomes disorderly, bills pile up, and the pet becomes unruly? That is one way to view them – as tasks and nothing more. But that is NOT the ONLY way to view them. Each of these tasks is part of a life that intersects with the lives of others. Consider in each activity you carry out – How can I show love through this? Do I care more about the task or the people impacted through it? What do I need to change about my own attitude or the way in which I’m performing this task in order to make it an act of love?
